Introduction


The mysterious power modern artificial intelligence (AI) demonstrated in competing to beat top human players in chess and go, is also exploited to make urban life more convenient, less stressful and more enjoyable. Techniques including complex network analysis and artificial neural networks have been applied to trip planning, weather forcasting, autor-driving car designing, regional development, and medical diagnosis. The "AI in Urban Life" satellite conference of NetSCIX2018, organized by one of the largest non-government scientific associations in China, Swarma Club, aims to bridge the gap between industry and academia, and to create an opportunity for scientists across disciplines to exchange notes on their practices in applying AI techniques to serve for a better urban life.

Organizer

Swarma Club, formally initiated in 2008, is one of the largest non-government scientific associations in China. Our vision is to build up an "institute without boundaries" that serves for interdisciplinary collaboration and open, accessible sciences.

We are Swarma Club, a Beijing-based and globally distributed network for junior Chinese scientists. Our vision is open, interdisciplinary sciences outside the college boundaries. It took ten years for us to evolve into one of the largest independent, nonprofit research networks in China. Our members have published a variety of teamwork in prestidge journals and conferences, including Physical Review Letters and International Conference on Computer Vision, collectively contributed to two books on AI, and are leading several start-ups, including auto-driving software company Momenta (A Round $500 million in 2016, B Round $4600 million in 2017) founded by Xudong Chao, and weather predicting service Color Cloud (Angel Round $50 million in 2014, $600 million in 2017) founded by Xingyuan Yuan. With the financial support from Kaifeng Foundation, we have hosted two summer workshops and conferences on "Geometry and Statistical Learning" in 2016 and 2017, among dozens of meet-ups on machine learning and complext networks per year.
